No denial, The little mermaid is one of my most favorite fairy tales.
She was totally different.
The prince and her were totally different.
But she loved him.
She was so brave to pursue the love of her life, be ready to trade off herself, her talent, her intoxicated voice...
She was confident, strong and curious type of girl, representing all the attractive characteristics of a successful modern woman.

Not poor-but-beautiful Cinderella, who cried out loud and BOOM! Godmother helped her immediately. Had fun and forgot all the necessary guidance, run away (even lost 1 shoe => what a shame) then BOOM, the prince found her just because of her tiny shoe size... => big foot => no love =)))))
Not rich-but-innocent Snow White, who lived with 7 strangers in the forest and tried/ate stuffs from the unknown old lady. BOOM! Prince knew where to find her, what a free prince... wandering around to find a girl. He was rich, no doubt! Lolz
Not Rich-Lazy-Beautiful Sleeping Beauty, be curious, be poisoned => Sleep as much as she want, never die, never getting older and marry a hundred-year-younger lad => nowadays, ppl call him her toy boy [sign] but in the past, they called it happy ending.

But my poor little mermaid, scarified herself for never returned love...
Because she knows what was the best for her love? because the prince was easily trust in what he was told [what a quick marriage] instead of slowing down and being wise...?
He never know the truth [who the hell knows?]
He was a normal man.
...
She was a smart, talent girl blinded by love.

How many little girls like her in the world?
